Generalist, or specialist? Whatever your stance, the SDGs are your business. When it comes to taking action on the SDGs, the deep impact on a single goal or superficial impact on a range of them can lead to an unproductive tradeoff and mitigate real progress. We gathered B Lab’s Insights team, researchers studying the B Corp movement, and B Corp leaders to explore why real progress toward the SDGs will require the concerted efforts of generalized specialists across sectors, framed by a critical research paper published earlier this year. There is no single solution to solving climate change, so we must take risks with bold experiments to “learn our way into the future.” Jan Sendzimir will explain how we must fundamentally restructure society to become carbon neutral – a massive effort that requires our society to unite as effectively as it did in WWII to reverse society’s polarization and re-establish trust in working together. Jan Sendzimir, originally a native of New England, has lived and studied all over the world: North America, Europe, Africa, and East and Central Asia. As a systems ecologist, he has worked with teams of scientists and laypeople (participatory science) to help local communities and nations to address the risk and uncertainty from unpredictable change arising from extremes of Climate Warming: droughts, floods, fires. He uses conceptual and formal modeling in conjunction with field research within participatory processes, e.g. Action Research or Adaptive Management, to guide scientific research and policy development related to the sustainable development of communities and ecosystems in five river systems: the Narew (Poland), the Oder and Barycz rivers (Poland), the Tisza river (Ukraine, Romania, and Hungary) and the Amudarya river (Uzbekistan). He also works in the Sahel scrub savanna on governance issues of agro-forestry in Niger and reservoir fisheries management in Burkina Faso. She took part in the recent creation of the What About Waste movement (WAW) with her friends Manuela and Betty last October, whose ambition is to ensure awareness of the use of plastic in our societies, with their emblematic Strawaws reusable straw. She calls out people to follow her lead and encourage people to create their own WAW for other single use plastic items. Fanny Everard is a business management student at KULeuven. A self-described waste tragic Candice Myers fell into the waste industry when she opened a small business with her sister in 2015 and the complexities of the issues surrounding waste captured her attention. Passionate about educating and finding solutions to the overconsumption leading to excess waste... she wants to change the narrative on waste being something we dispose of to a resource that needs to be valued. Self-described waste tragic Candice Myers fell into the waste industry when she opened a small business with her sister in 2015. With a hospitality and accounting background, she never dreamed that a career in waste would be her future, however, the complexities of the issues surrounding waste captured her attention and soon became a passion. Realising she needed to know more, she enrolled in a Bachelor of Sustainability degree at 38 as a single mother to 3 children. That completed she is now enrolled in a Masters of environmental sciences. She can often be found volunteering at litter pickups, building worm farms and debating waste issues. Candice’s passion is focussed on waste but encompasses all the environmental issues facing us in these modern times. Climate change is a pervasive and global challenge - can modest actions ever make a really big difference? Sometimes they do. A single teenager protesting, a simple change in the rules, or a simple but novel idea can be amplified with huge global impact. Using concepts previously applied to the weather, a team at Oxford is looking at runaway change, snowball effects and tipping points in human systems, searching for "sensitive intervention points" that might accelerate the transition to a post-carbon world. Cameron Hepburn is Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Oxford, and Director of the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. He also serves as the Director of the Economics of Sustainability Programme, based at the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School. Cameron has published widely on energy, resources and environmental challenges across disciplines including engineering, biology, philosophy, economics, public policy and law, drawing on degrees in law and engineering (Melbourne University) and masters and doctorate in economics (Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar). He has co-founded three successful businesses and provides advice on energy and environmental policy to government ministers (e.g. China, India, UK and Australia) and international institutions (e.g. OECD, UN). Once a farmer herself, Naeen is managing an irrigation infrastructure project in Jamaica that will boost farmers' productivity in a socially inclusive, gender-equitable and climate-sensitive way. Naeen Jackson is a Food Safety and Environmental Consultant at Jamaica's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. A passionate farmer, she is also an avid agricultural entrepreneur. Jackson has implemented food and environmental management systems including impact assessment and policy development. She is the Lead Consultant (Enhanced Agricultural Production, Marketing Facilities and Systems) for the Essex Valley Agriculture Development Project, funded by the UK and administered through the Caribbean Development Bank. It is the largest single investment (£35.5 M) in irrigation infrastructure in Jamaica, and seeks to enhance the productivity of farmers in the Essex Valley in a socially inclusive, gender-equitable and climate-sensitive way. It is expected to impact the lives and livelihoods of more than 700 farmers on 700 hectares of land by providing irrigation water and improved access to local and global markets.
