On the South Coast of South Africa, is a small town called Arniston, where local people, who are descendants of Khoi and San people, make a living as small-scale fishers. Arniston also has ancient fish traps, dating back thousands of years. Arniston is a charming coastal town located in the Overberg region of South Africa. It is situated near Cape Agulhas, which is widely known as the southernmost tip of Africa. Cultural survival traveled to Arniston, where we met with small-scale fisherwoman, Rowina Europa. Rowina told us about the impact that climate change has on small-scale fisherfolk. We then traveled to Buffeljagsbaai, where we met with Sarah Niemand, who echoed the sentiments of Rowina. When was the last time you asked "What's up with my drinking water?" Water is the foundation of life, yet few people can name the water source pouring from their faucets. She believes individuals become connected to their community and environment in a tangible way when they know the basic facts of their water source and the issues impacting it. Water warrior Sarah Houston has been pedaling a passion for holistic water management in the academic, corporate, and nonprofit sectors for over ten years. In 2016, Houston and her husband quit their jobs to adventure with a purpose. Through Wander Like Water, they used bicycle touring to connect YouTube viewers with water sources. The project caught on quickly and their audience spans over 50 countries with over a half million views. In 2021, Houston was hired as the first full-time Executive Director of Protect Our Aquifer and is pursuing a Master of Science in Earth Sciences from University of Memphis. In her talk, Sarah Goff urges her audience to recognize the enormous problems of overconsumption and wastefulness and create a revolutionary reuse retail system nationwide in order to address the climate crisis. Goff advocates for a system that rivals big box store new retail in both square footage and convenience so customers use the resources that are already produced and locally available, thus eliminating the need to manufacture and ship new products. Sarah Goff is the executive director and co-founder of The Repurpose Project: a non-profit junk shop, creative-reuse center, and architectural salvage operation in Gainesville, Florida, that is developing innovative ways to reduce waste and keep hard-tosalvage material out of the waste stream. Sarah grew up on the island of Kwajalein, in the Marshall Islands where she spent her childhood collecting trash and shell on the beach to make art. She saw firsthand the issues of trash and plastic in the ocean and now watches as her beloved childhood home, which stands just six feet above sea level, disappears because of climate change and sea-level rise. After graduating from Kwajalein High School, Sarah moved to Sarasota, Florida, and earned a BA in Natural Science and Fine Art from New College of Florida. She then moved to New York City and earned a fashion design degree from Parsons School of Design. The Repurpose Project is a perfect combination of her passions: art, science, and a larger life-purpose of making the world a better place. We all know the negative impacts plastic pollution has on marine life, but what about humans? After Sarah delivers a brief plastic production history lesson, she dives into a major issue when it comes to plastic pollution, microplastics, and provides the example of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to demonstrate the role of microplastics. Following this, however, is when Sarah brings up the main point of her talk: the impact plastic pollution has on humans. She ends her talk with providing examples of how to help combat plastic pollution and spread awareness for ocean conservation.
