Dan Pingaro, Executive Director of Sailors for the Sea, an ocean conservation nonprofit focused on the sailing and boating community, discusses the Clean Regatta Program. This interview highlights the program's implementation at the America's Cup races held in San Francisco in September 2013.

Since July 2011, Sailors for the Sea collaborated with the America's Cup Event Authority to deliver a model sustainability sporting event. Their efforts led to the 34th America's Cup receiving the highest level Clean Regattas certification.

This region, homeland to Indigenous tribes and site of the 1680 Pueblo Rebellion against Spanish colonization, carries deep historical traumas. Spanish is a dominant cultural influence, and most residents are bi-racial. Despite its enchanting landscape, the valley suffers from endemic poverty; New Mexico ranks 49th in education. Job opportunities are scarce, with drug distribution often serving as the primary income.
