Melissa Omand, an Assistant Professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, plans to deploy hundreds of tiny glass robots as deep-ocean sentinels. These robots will track the vertical transport and sequestration of carbon from the surface to the deep sea, focusing on the 'biological pump' and the fate of carbon from biological sources like phytoplankton.

Dr. Oldham, an expert in Chemical Oceanography, began her career studying chemistry in Canada, then researched metals in seawater in Bermuda. After completing her PhD and post-doctoral work, she joined URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography. Her current research focuses on intense redox chemistry in coastal oceans, hydrothermal vents, and polar systems.
