Mina Bakhshi, Haniya Tavasoli, and Rabia Hussain enjoyed freedoms in Afghanistan, pursuing education and work. Join us to hear Dr. Paula Stone Williams, a Christian pastor, discuss her profound journey from male to female at age sixty. This life-changing decision led to her losing influence in the evangelical world and grappling with intense family challenges.

Feeling isolated, she forged a new path, gaining a deeper awareness of gender inequities she had previously overlooked. Her book, *As a Woman*, shares her unique perspective on navigating faith, identity, and the universal human experience, offering insights into what it means to be male, female, and simply human.

Following wealthy socialite Ed Buck's conviction for crimes including the deaths of Gemmel Moore and Timothy Dean, Cannick stated, "Ed Buck is going to pay for the crimes he committed...to an entire community of Black men here." Her persistence was crucial in bringing this sordid story to light.

Cannick founded Justice for Gemmel and All of Ed Buck’s Victims, extending her advocacy beyond journalism. She co-founded My Hood Votes and the National Black Justice Coalition, the nation's largest Black LGBTQ civil rights organization. This event is presented by The Commonwealth Club of California, the nation's oldest and largest public affairs forum, established in 1903.

Indy Johar argues that humanity's first view of Earth from space initiated "planetary self-awareness," urging us to reimagine civilization as a global endeavor. Facing climate instability and AI's transformative impact, he advocates for "civilizational optionality"—a buffer against cascading shocks. He suggests embracing our limited knowledge fosters curiosity, tenderness, and care.

Johar envisions human-machine systems enhancing our capacity for complex discourse, defining intelligence as a conversational field for collective sense-making. This talk, presented January 27, 02026, is part of the Long Now Talks series, which fosters long-term thinking.
