To avert climate change, surely we’ll need a broader consensus than already exists, at least around the solutions. So, how might we scale a new story? And what role, if any, does the world of media play? George Kamiya speaks about the energy and greenhouse gas emissions from digital technologies, and provides ideas on how to keep them at bay in light of ever growing computing needs. He also discusses ways in which digital technologies can be employed to help combat the climate crisis. This talk is based on his much acclaimed work on digital technologies and energy at the International Energy Agency. George coordinates the IEA's work on digitalisation and tracking clean energy progress, and leads the agency’s analysis on ICT energy use and automated and shared mobility. He was a lead author of the 2017 Digitalization & Energy report and has contributed to the agency's work on climate change mitigation and adaptation. Plastic pollution and food insecurity are two of the most pressing social and environmental challenges we face today. Luckily for us, some of our small insect friends are willing and able to help us find solutions. George Shenusay is a New Yorker who has moved to Los Angeles to pursue his passion for sustainability. He accidentally inbread thousands of mealworms in middle school and now he’s found himself here. He’s studying environmental science at UCLA and is currently leading a research team with a focus on mealworms and their ability to eat plastic. George and his research team currently do their work at UCLA’s MIC (Molecular Instrumentation Center) and the BHS lab. They have been working on this project since 2018.
