Troubled by the lack of youth voices in Virginia climate policy, Dyanna Jaye co-founded the Virginia Student Environmental Coalition (VSEC) after the 2013 Power Shift convergence. VSEC's mission is to cultivate and elevate student voices in state-level decision-making, addressing specific challenges like coastline erosion and mountaintop removal mining.

As VSEC's first chair, Jaye established its structure and partnerships. Early actions included critiquing the Governor’s Energy Plan and hosting the 2015 Student Power Lobby Day to advocate for the Virginia Coastal Protection Act. Now active on 11 Virginia college campuses, VSEC continues to ensure students are heard on environmental policy.

Global women are at the forefront of movements and projects dedicated to building a healthy and just world. A recent event brought together grassroots women leaders and global advocates to address environmental degradation and the climate crisis.

They presented diverse strategies and solutions, including Indigenous rights, Rights of Nature, women's leadership, and food sovereignty, aimed at securing strong communities and a just planet for all generations. Speakers included Carmen Capriles, Dipti Bhatnagar, Jacqui Patterson, Neema Namadamu, Mitzi Jonelle Tan, Casey Camp Horinek, and Osprey Orielle Lake.

On March 13, WECAN and the Indigenous Women's Treaty Alliance petitioned the Army Corps of Engineers in Washington D.C. They demanded a robust environmental review of the proposed Line 5 crude oil pipeline reroute.

Enbridge's Line 5 operates illegally, threatening sacred ecosystems, clean water, treaty territories, and the global climate. Despite opposition, Enbridge plans a reroute and expansion. Activists insist Line 5 must be shut down and decommissioned, not merely rerouted.

The Indigenous Women's Treaty Alliance, supported by WECAN, Sierra Club, and community allies, delivered the petition. WECAN has facilitated the Alliance, comprising Great Lakes Indigenous women leaders, since 2022.

Indigenous women, tribal leaders, and allies are demanding its immediate shutdown and decommissioning.

Despite strong opposition, Enbridge proposes expanding and re-routing Line 5. This new route would devastate hundreds of waterways, including those vital to the Bad River Reservation, Lake Superior, and the Straits of Mackinac. It is imperative to stop this expansion and all fossil fuel projects now.
