A recent expedition in Mexico's Gulf of California tallied just 10 to 13 vaquitas, confirming these small porpoises are critically endangered but not yet extinct. Their population has plummeted from 600 in 1997, primarily due to entanglement in gillnets set for the endangered totoaba fish.

One interviewee was Cheepache-Nitty (Mono/Chukchansi), an Indigenous youth and Northwest Indian College student. Cheepache-Nitty advocates for stewarding Mother Earth and aims to decolonize the education system for future Indigenous and Black generations. Now in her 90s, Soskin serves at the Rosie the Riveter World War II/Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California, a park she helped establish.

Her talk, titled "Of Lost Conversations: Opportunity and Discrimination...", offers a firsthand perspective on the home front effort and the immense social changes she has witnessed.
