As planes ground to a halt and the travel industry effectively came to a standstill during the pandemic, we reflected on the basic notion of why we travel and how we travel. There is an urgent call to repair and replenish the damage we have done not only to our environment but our communities through regenerative travel. To start the healing process, we have to think about how and why we travel. There are 5 core principles for the travel industry to re-think how we exist. 1) Whole System Thinking 2) Honouring Sense of Place 3) Community Inclusion & Partnership 4) Aspirational in Nature 5) Continual Coevolution These guidelines focus on the inclusion of local communities and nature as everything is interconnected. Only by using the strengths of each stakeholder collectively and applying conscious, continual adaptation, we will create truly sustainable, regenerative destinations. Amanda Ho is the Co-Founder of Regenerative Travel, a booking platform for the Regenerative Resorts collection of independently owned eco-luxury boutique hotels dedicated to the highest levels of social and #environmentalimpact. She is the brand architect behind developing Regenerative Travel as a market leader for regenerative tourism and enables the hotels in the collection to create a deeper impact together. Previously as the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Electrify Magazine, a multi-media lifestyle publication, Amanda honed her craft as a storyteller, producer, and creative strategist for luxury hospitality and real estate companies, and lifestyle brands with a passion for sustainability. The privatization of water has significantly impacted communities, creating great hardships, especially on women in rural communities. Mary Grace Almandrez shares her perspective on this important issue, expanding upon the trickledown effect that lack of potable water creates. She encourages us to think about climate change through the lens of the people on the ground, and its impact on them in their day-to-day lives. Dr. Almandrez is Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Rhode Island. She is an active advocate for diversity, equity, and leads the development and sustenance of a vibrant and diverse community of students, staff, and faculty throughout the University. She joined URI from Brown University where she served as an advocate for all students to thrive in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. She supervised Residential Life, Student and Employee Accessibility Services, Student Conduct & Community Standards, and Student Support Services. She orchestrated several major reorganizations on the divisional and departmental levels. Dr. Almandrez also chaired Brown’s Threat Assessment Team. Prior to serving as associate vice president for Campus Life and dean of students, she was interim assistant vice president for Campus Life, associate dean of the College, and director of the Brown Center for Students of Color. Alongside this, non-state actors - including business and financial institutions - are being asked to join the Race to Zero and set their own long-term net zero targets and ambitious 2030 targets. Collaboration between governments, financial institutions and corporates will be key to delivering the transformations required. This event brought together perspectives from government, financial institutions and corporates to examine where we have got to now and what needs to happen beyond COP26 – not just to put us on track to halve global emissions by 2030, but also to help economies globally to build forward better following the pandemic, protect communities and nature, and build resilience to climate change. What’s your superpower? Angela Francis believes that hers might be being a mixed race economist who grew up in Derby - something that gives her a unique perspective when it comes to tackling climate change. A passionate environmentalist, Angela sees that the key to overcoming the climate challenges we face is proving to the public that transitioning to a green economy can change their lives for the better right now. Rather than trying to edge the environment to the top of a priority list already overloaded with Brexit, healthcare, crime and the economy, Angela argues that we must focus on how policy for the environment has the power to deliver real solutions to the problems people are already dealing with. Only by engaging with broader conversations about the kind of country we want to be will the environmental sector be able to design policies that a farmer in Cumbria or a factory worker in Derby will get behind. Angela Francis started as an accountant in the energy industry before moving into economic development where she has worked for the last 18 years. Throughout her career, she has always found ways to focus on how our human systems – energy, production, consumption, transport and planning – need to change to come into line with our planetary ones. After finding her home in the environmental advocacy sector, Angela is now Chief Advisor on Economics and Economic Development at WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). She provides economic advice across the climate, food and biodiversity programmes, as well as leading on trade and industrial policy for a green transition.
