We stand at a critical moment in history for food and farming. During the last century, our extractive farming practices have contributed to the depletion of nature and brought us to the brink of a planetary emergency, resulting in climate change, catastrophic biodiversity decline and a crisis for public health. With half of our land now used for agriculture, farmers across the globe have become the primary stewards of nature, climate and health. Yet their delivery of public goods requires redesigning our businesses and industries away from systems based on extraction and growth and towards approaches based on the principles of regeneration, sustainability and the circular economy. During this talk, Henry Dimbleby discusses the complexity of our food systems and the urgent need for us to create a common language for measuring the sustainability of our farming systems. Henry Dimbleby was made lead non-executive director of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in 2018. In 2019 the Environment Secretary appointed him to lead the National Food Strategy, an independent review into our food system. Formerly Henry co-founded the Leon restaurant chain (2004). He was a co-founder of the not-for-profit Sustainable Restaurant Association (2009) and the charity Chefs in Schools (2018). He co-wrote The School Food Plan (2013), which set out actions to transform what children eat in schools and how they learn about food. Henry previously worked as a Strategy Consultant at Bain & Company (1995-2002) where he advised businesses on strategic and organisational transformation. His first job was as a commis chef in Bruno Loubet’s Michelin-starred kitchen at The Four Seasons, Inn on The Park. Jill Tarter, the astrophysicist who inspired Jodie Foster's character in Carl Sagan's movie Contact, dedicated her career to the search for extraterrestrial life. She is now the Director of the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California... but it wasn't an easy path. After her scholarship was taken away, she went to the dean of the engineering college and said, "Dean Corson, this isn't fair. I've been on dean's list every semester." And he kindly said, "You know, you're right. It isn't fair. It isn't fair at all." She has no idea what he said when he called up Procter & Gamble, but he got her that scholarship back. 20 years later, when Dean Corson was the president of Cornell, he had an advisory committee and Jill Tarter was on it. She was able to go up to him all those years later and say, "See, President Corson? Thank you for believing in me. I'm on your advisory committee for this fantastic telescope and I have to thank you once again."

Mah Pe Ya Mini (Henry Skywater) was a great leader - a respected Elder, Knowledge Keeper and ceremonial leader from the Dakota Nation. Henry sang this ancient Dakota song he referred to as the Spirit of Life song often. He would share the Dakota creation story of a little blue light that would come from a little house in the heavens to enter a mother's womb, make a journey on the earth as it walks its life as human being, and then return back to the little house in the heavens. The meaning of the Spirit of Life song, as shared by Henry Skywater, is: Lightning beings! It's me! It's me! (x2) There is a house in the heavens where I was born It's me! It's me! Lightning beings! It's me! It's me! (x2) This song is being shared with the permission of Henry Skywater's family, who are sharing the song to continue his work of helping the people.
