Wildfires are distressing, yet a biocentric perspective reveals they are primarily climate-driven, not fuel-driven. This means landscape-scale forest thinning and prescribed burns are largely ineffective at reducing fire spread or intensity, a view supported by experts like George Wuerthner.

Fires are often used as an excuse for logging, whether for "fuels management" or "salvage." However, burned forests are vital carbon sinks and biodiverse habitats that should be allowed to recover naturally, as logging is detrimental.

Join host Jeff Corwin as he connects with some of the most threatened aquatic animals, including Florida's gentle manatees, the endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtle, and coral reefs. He highlights critical threats to manatees, such as habitat loss, cold snaps, and harmful algae blooms, which have led to record mortalities. Conservationists are racing to save these iconic creatures.

Efforts include restoring warm water habitats, advocating for dam removal to open vital waterways like the Ocklawaha River, and coordinating rescue and rehabilitation partnerships, exemplified by SeaWorld's work with rescued manatees like Avana. Protecting these watery worlds is essential for the planet's health.

The U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) protects species but acknowledges that some incidental harm, or "take," may occur. Sections 7 and 10 provide distinct pathways to allow activities while minimizing this impact.

Section 7 requires federal agencies to consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or NOAA when their actions might affect listed species, resulting in an incidental take statement. In contrast, Section 10 enables non-federal entities to obtain incidental take permits (ITPs) by developing a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP). The primary difference lies in who is involved: federal agencies for Section 7, and private, state, or local entities for Section 10.

Crucially, while Section 7 consultations can stand alone, Section 10's HCPs always require an accompanying Section 7 consultation. This is because issuing an ITP is a federal action, necessitating its own consultation.

Join Jeff Corwin on "Wildlife Nation" for an adventure in conservation. This episode highlights the American crocodile's remarkable comeback, showing how a nuclear power station provides an ideal nesting site and Jeff finding wild baby crocs in Key Largo. This success story demonstrates stewardship's role in their recovery.

Next, Jeff investigates climate change's impact on coral reefs. He works with biologists to combat coral bleaching and restore Florida's endangered reefs, highlighting conservationists protecting North America's wildlife.

This episode of the Circular Economy Show explores how a circular economy can reverse biodiversity loss, largely driven by resource extraction. It features an interview with the lead author of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's latest paper on the topic, highlights real-world examples of circular design benefits from agriculture to the built environment, and includes The Nature Conservancy's Robert Jones discussing aquaculture's role in ocean health.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a UK charity, accelerates the transition to a circular economy. Subscribe for more insightful videos on our YouTube channel. Find out more about our work and follow us online at ellenmacarthurfoundation.org.

Discover how astronomer Vera Rubin's persistence led to the groundbreaking discovery of dark matter, a concept now fundamental to understanding our universe. Despite initial dismissal and facing barriers as a woman in science, Rubin's work revealed that astronomical objects exaggerate gravity's grip, earning her the National Medal of Science and posthumous honors like the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.

Geothermal energy, despite lower carbon emissions than coal, is not benign. Projects like Nevada's proposed Baltazor site highlight significant environmental and social costs. Geothermal development leads to habitat destruction (e.g., in Kenya and for Nevada's Dixie Valley toad) and violent evictions of indigenous communities.

Drilling releases toxic elements like mercury, arsenic, and boron into groundwater. Facilities also cause air pollution, including sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, contributing to acid rain and health issues, as seen in Iceland. Moreover, "enhanced geothermal systems" (EGS) utilize fracking technology, injecting high-pressure slurries that can poison groundwater and induce earthquakes, mirroring problems in the oil and gas industry.

Aeshnina, a 13-year-old environmental activist, is known for her brave advocacy against plastic waste. She challenged world leaders, including Donald Trump and Australia's Prime Minister, to manage waste in their countries and reclaim it from Indonesia. Aeshnina also works to clean the Brantas River, builds an imported waste museum, and runs online campaigns via @river.warrior and @info.mistik.

Her talk highlights deep concern over plastic pollution in Indonesia's rivers and seas, emphasizing that producers must take responsibility for collecting and processing their waste. This presentation was given at an independently organized TEDx event. Learn more here.
