In 1987 Arizona, scientists created Biosphere 2, a 3-acre domed facility designed to mimic Earth's living systems without external aid. Early experiments, where crews lived inside, faced oxygen loss and food shortages. Despite initial failures, Biosphere 2 now conducts some of the world's largest earth science experiments, offering vital insights into natural systems for global challenges.

We will also speak with participants from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's "From Linear to Circular" program. Forty-four young professionals and students recently completed a week-long study on the circular economy. Discover their experiences, motivations, and how they will apply their learning to their studies and careers.

Author David Wallace-Wells warns that coral reefs may not survive another generation, potentially facing total extinction by 2050 without significant policy changes. He highlights that humanity is already experiencing a mass extinction event. The World Wildlife Fund reports a 60% decline in vertebrate mammals since 1970, while insect populations may have plummeted by 75% in recent decades.

Our oceans currently absorb much of the atmospheric emissions, preventing even higher global temperatures. However, they remain highly vulnerable to pollution and other impacts. Wallace-Wells, author of "The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming" (https://amzn.to/2Of5N3y), emphasizes the critical state of these vital ecosystems. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) comprises two limbs. Its upper limb transports warm, tropical waters northward, releasing heat influencing European weather. The lower limb carries cold, dense waters southward at depth.

Driven by solar radiation, the AMOC's upper limb features vigorous currents like the Gulf Stream, flowing north along the Atlantic's western boundary. These currents, forming eddies, carry heat towards higher latitudes, reaching the Nordic Seas to cool and densify.

In regions like the Labrador Sea, these cooled, dense waters plunge via convection to 1000-2000m. This forms the Deep Western Boundary Current, the AMOC's lower limb, flowing slowly southward along the continental slope. Further south, this deep flow is disrupted by topography and eddies, losing its structure.

Wallace’s flying frogs employ a unique camouflage strategy: masquerading as bird droppings. Researchers discovered that young froglets, painted to resemble fecal matter with red and white splotches, were attacked half as often by predators as those with solid colors. This "fecal camo" helps these young frogs survive to adulthood, allowing them to grow into the green, web-footed adults found in rainforest canopies.

This fascinating research was highlighted by the Center for Biological Diversity in [Endangered Earth Online](https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/publications/earthonline/endangered-earth-online-no1231.html) and a [Scientific American report](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/this-flying-frog-spends-its-youth-masquerading-as-poop/). The Center, a 501c3 nonprofit, works to protect diverse wild species through science, law, and creative media, ensuring a future where the wild thrives. Join host Jeff Corwin in Central Florida as he helps rescue gopher tortoises threatened by new real estate development. These iconic reptiles are vital "ecosystem engineers," digging extensive burrows that provide critical habitat for over 360 other species. However, Florida's rapid growth, with 1,000 new residents daily, is destroying their specific sandy habitats.

Historically, some older permits even allowed developers to bury tortoises alive. Corwin, alongside Defenders and Saving Florida's Gopher Tortoises, intervenes at a development site. Using specialized cameras and careful excavation with heavy machinery, they work to safely relocate these essential creatures before their homes are paved over. Jonathan Rowson, director of the Social Brain Centre at the Royal Society of Arts, highlights the problematic nature of the word 'spiritual.' It means too much to some and too little to others, leading to diverse interpretations—from psychological depth to philosophical confusion, or a critique of materialism to capitalist exploitation.

Following a two-year RSA inquiry, Dr. Rowson proposes a framework for a post-religious spirituality. This initiative seeks to make the spiritual less nebulous while maintaining its inclusive ambiguity.

The new framework redefines four existential touchstones: Love (from romance to rootedness), Death (from denial to confrontation), Self (from esteem to transcendence), and Soul (from substance to perspective).

"Two American Families: 1991-2024" is a FRONTLINE documentary chronicling the economic struggles of two Milwaukee families—one Black, one white—over 34 years. It intimately follows the Stanleys and Neumanns as they battle to avoid poverty amidst the changing American economy, from the rise of lower-wage work to current inflation. Despite continuous challenges across six presidential administrations, both families and their now-grown children demonstrate remarkable resilience.

This powerful journalism, made possible by viewers, raises unsettling questions about the American economy. Support your local PBS station: [Donate to PBS](https://www.pbs.org/donate/). The Paris Agreement, three years on, sparks debate about its ambition and effectiveness. While it provides predictability for climate action, experts note we're "not doing enough" for the 1.5° warming target. Trevor Houser cautions against a binary view; progress has already averted suffering, and more benefits are achievable while aiming for 1.5°-2°.

Rapid global decarbonization, focused on carbon reduction, is crucial. Joshua Goldstein emphasizes that U.S. climate leadership is vital; its absence hinders other nations' goals. Staffan Qvist cites Sweden's successful hydro and nuclear grid, contrasting it with Germany's problematic 100% renewables pursuit.
