But Matt Damon, 46, also is co-founder of Water.org, a nonprofit that promotes access to safe water and sanitation. National Geographic Editor in Chief Susan Goldberg interviewed him in Washington, D.C., as he prepared to address leaders at the World Bank. In this candid and emotional interview, Damon discusses the world’s water crisis and how his nonprofit is trying to push the needle towards progress. The percentage of people defecating in the open air declined worldwide from 1990 to 2015, with the most dramatic reductions in some of the least developed countries. Yet nearly 950 million people still practice this public health hazard—a challenge augmented by population growth. Damon hopes that solutions such as microfinancing will help open air defecation be a thing of the past by 2030. Food production must rise by 70% to feed the planet by 2050, farmers are disappearing across the globe, impoverished communities struggle to get access to fresh healthy food, and America’s rust belt slides into decline. Could the answer to these seemingly disparate challenges lie at the intersection between a desert in Spain and a parking lot in Brooklyn? Matt Bodnar, named to Forbes “30 Under 30”, called a “Rising Restaurateur Star” by the National Restaurant Association and a “Strategy Pro” by Restaurant Hospitality Magazine, is a partner at early stage investment firm Fresh Hospitality. Bodnar joined Fresh in 2011 after several years at Goldman Sachs. He sourced and lead the firm’s investment in I Love Juice Bar, vertical farming startup Square Roots, Vui’s Kitchen, Grilled Cheeserie, and several more deals. Bodnar is a board member and works closely with a number of portfolio companies including Tazikis, I Love Juice Bar, Martins BBQ, Octane Coffee, and Fresh Technology. A universal problem often begs a universal solution. However, there is no simple solution to the world’s increasingly pressing climate issues. Whether it be revamping infrastructure to adapt to sea level rise or funding efforts to mitigate further damages from emissions, whatever series of initiatives or plans of action we come up with will require a hefty sum of capital investment. Industry and corporations have played a large part in the development of the Anthropocene, nevertheless there is hope if we can find ways to reverse this trend and get corporate to work for climate, rather than against it. Devyn is a junior at Brown University out of Long Beach, California. During his time at Brown, he has worked with the University's curricular resource center to put together a new concentration in Environment and Enterprise, which studies the nexus of climate change, the private sector, and the sociocultural aspects of consumerism and capitalism. Currently, he is serving as the head of shareholder and community engagement for Brown’s Socially Responsible Investment Fund as well as interning with both the Office of Sustainability and the Brown Investment Office. He is also co-authoring a book chapter on the climate and economic resiliency of New England coastal cities. As the momentum towards building a Circular Economy grows worldwide, proponents search for examples that best illustrate what it would be like to live “Circularly.” Author and designer Azby Brown uses illustrations from his ground-breaking book “Just Enough” to show how Japan paved the way centuries ago. The Circular Economy model adheres so closely to Edo-period environmental resource and design principles that Edo can serve as an essential prototype and inspiration, demonstrating that living in a highly-developed Circular Economy can be comfortable, healthy, and beautiful. Azby Brown has lived in Japan for over 3 decades, developing a multidisciplinary practice spanning environmentalism, design, and the fine arts. His groundbreaking writings on traditional Japanese carpentry, compact housing, and traditional sustainable practices are recognised internationally. Since the start of the Fukushima disaster in March, 2011, he has been lead researcher for the global citizen-science organisation Safecast; engaged in assisting affected communities and analysing and reporting the issues they face. In this discussion he calls out important points from his book, co-authored by with Geoffrey Garver, "Right Relationship: Buildng a Whole Earth Economy.  Our current economic system—which assumes endless growth and limitless potential wealth—flies in the face of the fact that the earths resources are finite. The result is increasing destruction of the natural world and growing, sometimes lethal, tension between rich and poor, global north and south. Trying to fix problems piecemeal is not the solution.
