SME Climate Hub: Supporting SMEs to decarbonise Wednesday 3 November COP26, WMB Business Pavilion, Blue Zone, SEC, Glasgow Globally, SMEs account for over 90% of businesses. Climate action by SMEs is therefore essential if we are to achieve our global goal of an inclusive net zero economy, consistent with the ambition of the Race to Zero. This session explored some of the challenges and opportunities for engaging SMEs, highlighting action by government, finance and businesses, as well as featuring SMEs who have already made the SME Climate Commitment. The session also introduced the SME Climate Hub tool being launched by BSR and CISL that will provide a free online training course for global SMEs in decarbonisation. Fresh water entering the ocean from this melting has major implications for the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation , or #AMOC, which is critical to maintain global weather patterns. Dr Lindsay Murray’s talk will highlight examples of the impact of climate change, largely through human activity, on wildlife and, using the experience of the ‘anthropause’ during lockdown as a catalyst, aim to encourage a call to action towards greener, wilder and more respectful ways of co-existing with other species in nature for the shared benefit of all. Dr Lindsay Murray is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Psychology at the University. Her research interests are predominantly in primatology, particularly personality, laterality, social behaviour and self-recognition, but also extend to wider aspects of animal behaviour, including elephant grief and ecotourism involving brown bears. She is on the Council of the Primate Society of Great Britain and the Education Committee of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. John Braxton, Co-President Emeritus AFT Local 2026, Community College of Phila. John worked for 20 years in the reform movement within the Teamsters union. He also began teaching at Community College of Philadelphia, where he was co-president of the union there. He was a founder of US Labor Against the War and has helped to build the Labor Network for Sustainability. He is one of the originators of the resolutions that the American Federation of Teachers has passed endorsing strong action on climate change, including support for the carbon fee and dividend approach. Peter Knowlton, Past President UE, Radio & Machine Workers of America Peter was a member of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) for 35 years until his retirement in 2019. He first became active in the labor movement in the late 1970’s as a union cab driver, rank and file activist, and organizer in Minneapolis, MN. He went on to become a Field Organizer, President of the Northeast Region, and eventually elected UE General President. Keon Liberato is a railroad track maintainer and the President & Principal Officer of BMWED-IBT Local 3012 Arlene Grant, an artist, humanitarian, coach, and speaker, is an active member of CCL, Braver Angels and organizations working to improve environmental, food, racial and social justice using art, communication and education. Arlene is the Creative Director and Founder of ArlieSpeaks Media, LLC and Cleanse Your Cache, which empowers advocacy resilience and helps people reclaim their lives. The privatization of water has significantly impacted communities, creating great hardships, especially on women in rural communities. Mary Grace Almandrez shares her perspective on this important issue, expanding upon the trickledown effect that lack of potable water creates. She encourages us to think about climate change through the lens of the people on the ground, and its impact on them in their day-to-day lives. Dr. Almandrez is Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Rhode Island. She is an active advocate for diversity, equity, and leads the development and sustenance of a vibrant and diverse community of students, staff, and faculty throughout the University. She joined URI from Brown University where she served as an advocate for all students to thrive in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. She supervised Residential Life, Student and Employee Accessibility Services, Student Conduct & Community Standards, and Student Support Services. She orchestrated several major reorganizations on the divisional and departmental levels. Dr. Almandrez also chaired Brown’s Threat Assessment Team.
