Greenland’s ice sheets contain enough fresh water to raise sea levels over twenty feet. While this is not an immediate threat, the latest research shows that #Greenland’sGlaciers are shrinking at seven times the rate of just a few years ago, an average of 30 million tonnes an hour. Fresh water entering the ocean from this melting has major implications for the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation , or #AMOC, which is critical to maintain global weather patterns. Dr Lindsay Murray is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Psychology at the University. Her research interests are predominantly in primatology, particularly personality, laterality, social behaviour and self-recognition, but also extend to wider aspects of animal behaviour, including elephant grief and ecotourism involving brown bears. She is on the Council of the Primate Society of Great Britain and the Education Committee of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. The privatization of water has significantly impacted communities, creating great hardships, especially on women in rural communities. Mary Grace Almandrez shares her perspective on this important issue, expanding upon the trickledown effect that lack of potable water creates. She encourages us to think about climate change through the lens of the people on the ground, and its impact on them in their day-to-day lives. Dr. Almandrez is Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Rhode Island. She is an active advocate for diversity, equity, and leads the development and sustenance of a vibrant and diverse community of students, staff, and faculty throughout the University. She joined URI from Brown University where she served as an advocate for all students to thrive in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. She supervised Residential Life, Student and Employee Accessibility Services, Student Conduct & Community Standards, and Student Support Services. She orchestrated several major reorganizations on the divisional and departmental levels. Dr. Almandrez also chaired Brown’s Threat Assessment Team. Is there any merit to the studies that show that historical CO2 levels lag behind temperature, and not lead them?
Yes, there's merit to those studies, says Peter Hildebrand, Director of the Earth Science Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, responding to a question from Twitter (https://twitter.com/Seth_b_clark/stat...).

In the pre-industrial age, the CO2 response to temperature was that the temperature would go up and CO2 would go up. Or if the temperature went down, CO2 would go down. Because when the temperature rose, the whole biosphere revved up and emitted CO2. So we understand that process.

In the post-industrial age, the opposite is true. Increasing CO2 in the atmosphere is leading to increased temperature. So two different things happened, one pre-industrial, where temperature was driving the CO2, and post-industrial, where CO2 was driving temperature. Which means a completely different physical-biological process is going on.Published on Sep 24, 2013

Matt decided to get a Geoscience single-subject teaching credential at UC Irvine, and after several years of teaching Marine Science (chemistry, biology, ecology, and other related topic concerning the world’s oceans) and ROP Environmental Horticulture (career technical education in using plants for beauty, shelter, and food) at Northwood High School (Irvine, CA), he became extremely interested in the connection between the food we eat and the negative impacts of modern agriculture on the health of the oceans (acidification, ocean warming, dead zones, etc.), so he telephoned his old Peace Corps friend Nathan.

In 1999, Matt and Bobbie Brown met Nathan McFall in a small village, Kuma-Dunyo, in Togo, West Africa. They worked with farmers, non- government organizations, and students introducing and implementing environmental awareness and education programs, soil conservation techniques, and animal husbandry.
