The youth population was projected to increase by over 78 million from 2021 to 2030, with low-income countries contributing to nearly half of this growth. It is essential for education and training systems to adapt to this challenge. High-quality apprenticeships, carefully planned internships, and volunteering programs can serve as valuable entry points into the job market for first-time jobseekers and recent graduates. Jean Mary Tjiohimba, who is from the Khwe community of South Africa talks to us about the successes and struggles of the Youth in her community. With over 40 percent of the world's population under the age of 25, there are currently about 1.2 billion young people in the world. Youth are a global asset, and investing in youth and safeguarding their interests is critical for both social and economic stability. Jean Mary tells about about some of the challenges faced by the youth in her community. Through his leadership of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation, he continues the legacy of his grandfather, the late corporate environmental pioneer Ray C. Anderson. With a plan developed for the state of Georgia as the example, John makes a powerful case for a new and exciting method to fighting climate change that incorporates not only solutions that reduce carbon emissions but also those that address social issues such as unemployment and hunger on a local level. Advocating for the environment is part of John A. Lanier’s DNA. As the executive director of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation, he continues the legacy of his grandfather, the late corporate environmental pioneer Ray C. Anderson through Foundation programs that seek to create a brighter, more sustainable world. Through this work, John is spearheading Drawdown Georgia, a movement designed to scale the most effective climate solutions for the state of Georgia. He currently serves as a member of the board of directors of the Southface Institute, a nonprofit working to advance green building and a regenerative economy. He is author of “Mid-Course Correction Revisited,” an updated edition of his grandfather’s first book. John earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law and holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in history and economics from the University of Virginia. In this episode, we will be joined by Anne Ascensio and Sean Carney. Anne is the Head of Design at Dassault Systemes and she will talk us through what she has learnt working at many large companies and what advice she’d give to young designers out there. How influencing and not controlling is the answer to climate change. We rely on nature for our survival. Water engineer Mary Trudeau explains how our planet functions as a whole and how the smallest changes have the biggest impact on our lakes, soils and atmosphere. Mary Trudeau has dedicated her career to water. She is a professional engineer with 15 years of experience managing municipal water infrastructure and 15 years of experience as a consultant providing advice bridging science and policy, in particular concerning water environment protection. She completed Ph.D. research on the topic of urbanization and its effects on rivers and fish communities. In her non-work world, Mary is the proud mother of two sons and lives in constant amazement at the opportunities offered by circumstance and nature.
