Racism denies humanity, sexism demeans, and their intersection limits true freedom. Frances Cudjoe-Waters, a Black woman and Harvard Law alumna, realized the exhaustion of politely presenting her pain to predominantly white audiences. She decided to abandon polite conversation and speak her truth, declaring, "I Ain't Sorry." She never expected to witness the reemergence of civil rights issues like Charlottesville and repeated acquittals for killings of Black individuals, reminiscent of the 1960s. While seeking to facilitate discussions, she recognized the toll of maintaining dispassionate intellectualism. Her family was featured in the Dallas Morning News.

The Great Barrier Reef's protection is again under international scrutiny by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. UNESCO stresses that tackling climate change is crucial for the Reef's survival.

Despite this, the Australian government is criticized for its inaction on climate change, instead allocating significant funds to the fossil fuel industry. This approach jeopardizes the Reef's future.

Tennessee native Erica Davis recognized that rural communities often see little benefit from local oil and gas extraction. Collaborating with grassroots organizers in Campbell County, she researched and sponsored a bill to reform oil and natural gas severance taxes.

Davis's bill aims to raise these taxes, which are the sole legislative means to keep extraction wealth in-state. Crucially, it seeks to distribute all revenue directly to the affected communities where extraction occurs, rather than the current one-third. Despite Davis's lobbying efforts and bipartisan support, the bill was dropped from the 2015-2016 docket. Now pursuing an environmental law degree, Davis plans to revive the legislation in the next session.

The first Igniting the Fire Gathering, initiated by Elder Dave Courchene, occurred in 2006 at Manitou Api, a sacred site in Manitoba's Whiteshell Provincial Park. This event, featuring Elders Robin Greene and Don Cardinal, reunited Original Peoples, with turtles symbolizing new life and Indigenous rebirth.

Now an annual event by Turtle Lodge, Igniting the Fire is open to all cultures, bringing nations to Manitou Api to share knowledge and ceremonies, with Elders transferring wisdom to youth. Attendance grew from 350 in 2006. Documentaries, including *The 8th Fire* (www.the8thfire.org), have featured the event. For more, visit Igniting the Fire or Dave Courchene Jr.

Our electricity use connects us to a global infrastructure reliant on non-renewable resources, causing pollution and climate change. While environmental impacts draw public outcry, less attention is paid to communities impoverished by energy providers prioritizing profit over human well-being. These communities hold the greatest potential to transform our energy system from one dominated by "big dirty energy" to a distributed, clean, and democratically controlled model.

Jackson Koeppel will share Soulardarity's work on community-owned solar street lighting in Highland Park, MI, and the history of US energy monopolies. He will explain why a clean energy transition means more than just changing power sources; it fundamentally shifts who controls that power.
