Last year, severe drought drained many of Italy’s rivers, and dried up 45% of its farmland. This year, it’s #flooding. Parts of northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region received half their average annual rainfall in 36 hours. Rivers burst their banks, submerging thousands of acres of farmland. #PeterWadhams, Professor Emeritus, Cambridge University, lives in Turin and is witnessing the effects of these crises firsthand. This summer, it may be too dry or too wet, but heat will be the major concern as the #Climate Crisis continues to unfold. Rapid melting has led to #avalanches and flash floods, which exacerbated the heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan in 2022. At the same time, both poles are losing ice mass at an unanticipated rate. Professors Detlef Stammer, Director of the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability at the University of Hamburg and Peter Wadhams, Emeritus Professor of Ocean Physics at Cambridge University share their findings about our disappearing glaciers, and some of the measures that are being taken to try to save them. With over 150 million tons of plastic debris in the oceans, its weight will soon be greater than all the fish in the sea if we don’t act to stop it. Fresh water entering the ocean from this melting has major implications for the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation , or #AMOC, which is critical to maintain global weather patterns. In 2016, Ah Tak was appointed by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department Hong Kong as the official mascot. Since then, he has been dedicating his life to promoting love and respect for the environment. It is reported that he remains single due to his strong devotion to his career. This talk was part of the TEDxTongChongSt COUNTDOWN. ACTION. NOW. virtual event on Oct. 15, 2020. COUNTDOWN is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Ah Tak is a dinosaur-like creature in green who speaks Cantonese.
