The workshop included presentations from the Climate Action Reserve and the American Carbon Registry on carbon offset standards and forest project requirements. Great River Energy discussed carbon policy from an energy provider's perspective, while the Aitkin County Land Department updated attendees on a Northwoods carbon offset project. The event was organized by the Aitkin County Land Department, The Forest Guild, Northeastern Area - US Forest Service, and Dovetail Partners.

Each year, 500 billion petroleum-based cups are used for minutes then discarded, a problem too vast for recycling alone. The solution lies in durable reuse infrastructure: standardized, returnable packaging systems that treat containers as valuable assets, not waste. Such systems already thrive in countries like Colombia and France.

A global coalition, including concert venues, multinationals, and governments, is actively building standards and financing to scale these reuse systems worldwide. Amy Larkin, co-founder of PR3: Global Alliance to Advance Reuse, leads this effort. Her organization has united over 80 leaders to establish global reuse industry standards, championing reuse over recycling as the foundation for a sustainable packaging economy. In 2025, The Ocean Cleanup achieved a record-breaking year, removing over 25 million kilograms of waste from aquatic environments, bringing their total catch to 46 million kilograms. They also deployed two new Interceptors in Honduras and Panama.

Expanding their mission, the organization launched the 30 Cities Program to stop one-third of river plastic emissions into oceans, and introduced Coastal Sweeps for legacy plastic near shores. Developing new technologies further solidified 2025 as their most impactful year yet.
