Biodiversity

About This Collection

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. It is necessary for life to thrive on Earth.

Aldo Leopold, one of the great thinkers of conservation, observed more than half a century ago the importance of protecting species. "To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering," he wrote. Losing species is like throwing away one by one the engine parts of an airplane while flying.

Biodiversity is a major initiative of Conservation International.

Biodiversity conservation provides substantial benefits to meet immediate human needs, such as those for clean, consistent water flows; protection from floods and storms; and a stable climate.

For shorebirds nesting near SpaceX's launch site in South Texas, that's not hypothetical. The Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge provides critical habitat for nesting shorebirds and countless other species. But since SpaceX began operating nearby, rocket explosions have sent concrete and metal debris flying onto refuge lands, triggered wildfires, and damaged wildlife habitat. A 2024 study found that after one launch, every monitored shorebird nest near the launch site suffered egg damage or loss. Now, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to give 715 acres of this protected wildlife refuge to SpaceX. Instead of holding the company accountable for the damage, the government is trying to hand over even more public land to one of the richest corporations on Earth. We're suing to stop this harmful land swap and protect one of South Texas' most important wildlife refuges before more habitat is sacrificed for rocket expansion. Because wildlife shouldn't have to raise their young in a rocket launch zone. Take action at the link in our bio. #PublicLands #Shorebirds #SpaceX
