Indigenous women are developing local solutions to climate change. Panelists will discuss its impacts on Indigenous women, their communities, and livelihoods, sharing experiences in implementing solutions. These include land management, resilient food systems, and innovative economic approaches that foster community and ecosystem well-being.

The panel features Martha Agbani-Barinuazor (Lokiaka Community Development Centre), Celia Nichim (YIMOM, Mujeres Sanadoras), Tania Eulalia Martínez Cruz, and Monica Coc Magnusson (Cultural Survival). Bia’ni Madsa’ Juárez López (Keepers of the Earth Fund) will moderate.

Green energy can’t come at the cost of biodiversity loss or the desecration of Indigenous cultures. February 2024 was a big month for defending that position in Arizona, where the Center began.

First we filed an injunction, alongside the Tohono O’odham Nation and San Carlos Apache Tribe, to stop construction of wind-power transmission lines that are damaging sacred sites and harming the fragile San Pedro River, as captured in this video.

We also won a major victory with Navajo allies — and help from 7,000 supporters — against multiple proposed hydropower projects in Black Mesa. The projects would have depleted aquifers, destroyed prehistoric sites, and harmed Mexican spotted owl habitat, worsening problems caused by decades of coal extraction. This win also establishes a new nationwide policy giving Tribes veto power over permits targeting their land. Dr. Jonathan Kolby, long fascinated by reptiles and amphibians, is dedicated to preventing their extinction in Honduras. A global chytrid fungus outbreak severely threatens frog populations, especially in cloud forests like Cusuco National Park.

Kolby founded the Honduras Amphibian Conservation and Rescue Center to treat sick frogs from Cusuco, preparing them for reintroduction. His mission also includes sharing Honduras' incredible biodiversity and fostering greater involvement of local students in conservation.

Terisa Siagatonu, a queer Samoan spoken word artist, educator, and activist from the Bay Area, shares her powerful poem on climate change and climate justice. A UC Santa Cruz graduate, she has performed on stages from Boston’s Cutler Majestic Theatre to the Oakland PRIDE Festival.

Currently, Terisa directs PIER (Pacific Islander Education and Retention) at UCLA. This vital project combats low matriculation rates of Pacific Islander students into higher education by offering tutoring, mentorship, and advising to high school students in Los Angeles.

Her work, rooted in devotion to her Pacific Islander community, empowers youth through spoken word and college access, fostering self-empowerment and sustainable community impact.

This loss devastates biodiversity; nearly 50% of threatened and endangered species rely on wetlands, with over a third living exclusively there.
