Carl Safina explores the inner lives of animals, revealing their capacity for perception, thought, and emotion. He challenges us to reconsider how we refer to them, emphasizing their individuality and the urgent need to protect them as we face a crisis of extinction. He poses a critical question: Do we have the will to ensure the survival of life on Earth?

Safina, a recipient of multiple prestigious fellowships and awards, holds a PhD in ecology and serves as the inaugural endowed professor for nature and humanity at Stony Brook University. He has contributed to various publications, including The New York Times and National Geographic. This talk was part of a TEDx event, independently organized by a local community. The Center for Biological Diversity, a Tucson-based 501c3 nonprofit, believes human welfare is deeply linked to nature's biodiversity. We use science, law, and creative media to protect species on the brink of extinction and safeguard the lands, waters, and climate they need. Our mission is to ensure future generations inherit a world where the wild thrives.

Calling someone an "animal" often implies they are less than human, undeserving of respect or rights. Yet, biologically, humans are animals.

Scientists increasingly find intelligence and consciousness prevalent across nature. This understanding demands we rethink what it truly means to be an animal.

Visionary naturalist Carl Safina suggests that understanding other species begins with observation and humility.

A scruffy orphan owlet named Alfie was rescued by award-winning nature author Carl Safina, leading to a profound friendship. Through this bond, Carl gained rare insights into owl family life, witnessing their recovery, courtship, and motherhood. This experience revealed to him that owls are relational beings capable of expressing love.

Carl argues that Western culture has distanced humans from their connection to nature, emphasizing that true progress requires a moral revolution. He believes that recognizing the complex relationships in nature is essential for addressing climate issues. His lyrical non-fiction blends scientific understanding with emotional connection, advocating for a shift in values towards a more harmonious existence with the living world. Learn more at TEDx.

Since 1960, Jane Goodall has been synonymous with wild chimpanzee study, conservation, and advocacy for hope. Her life experiences and the stories she shares are central to her identity, reflecting a scientific curiosity that began in childhood.

In an interview on "Dispatches from The Well," Jane discussed the significance of stories, recounting a childhood memory at age four. She patiently observed a hen laying an egg, an experience she views as foundational to becoming a scientist: asking questions, seeking answers, learning from mistakes, and developing patience.
