For the first time, olive seeds have been deposited in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a crucial international effort to secure the long-term preservation of olive genetic diversity.

This inaugural deposit was a collaborative endeavor involving the FAO's International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, the International Olive Council, the Universities of Córdoba and Granada, and support from Spain's Plant Genetic Resources Centre and NordGen. The FAO Treaty empowers nations to conserve, share, and utilize crop diversity.
