Bioeconomy in Action: Black Soldier Flies, Turning Waste into Value

April 30, 2026

Black soldier flies (BSF) provide a practical, scalable solution to convert organic waste into valuable inputs for food and agriculture. The BioDAF II project in Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, exemplifies this by transforming urban organic waste into nutrient-dense protein feed for livestock and rich organic fertilizer. This bioeconomy approach recovers value from waste streams, reintegrating it into local production systems.

These initiatives strengthen food system resilience, reduce dependence on imported livestock feed and chemical fertilizers, and create income opportunities for vulnerable communities, especially women and youth. By turning urban waste into productive resources, BSF support more efficient, local, and sustainable agriculture.
