Are your fruits and vegetables ripening or spoiling too quickly? The issue may lie in how you store them. In this episode of Science and Cooking, chef Heinz Wuth explains ethylene, a natural gas released by certain foods like bananas and avocados, which accelerates ripening in other produce.

Some vegetables, such as cucumbers and leafy greens, are particularly sensitive to ethylene. To keep your produce fresh longer and reduce food waste, store certain items separately, refrigerate them, and control moisture levels. On World Food Day 2026, FAO encourages us to innovate in food preservation. Share your tips for keeping fruits and vegetables fresh in the comments!
