For Rita, a mother of six, each day began with a long walk to fetch water before tending her small farm an exhausting routine shaped by climate shocks, poor harvests and uncertainty. Today, that story has changed. Through a partnership between the Government of Angola, the European Union and FAO, the Banda Chibia Dam now secures water for agriculture and livelihoods. With a capacity of over 21 million cubic metres, the dam irrigates 750 hectares of land, supports nearly 500 family farms and serves more than 5,000 people, enabling climate-smart agriculture and resilience. Through Farmer Field Schools, communities have learned to manage water efficiently, diversify crops and farm sustainably. The results are visible: green fields, year-round vegetable production and improved incomes. Rita now starts her day harvesting food, not searching for water. The Banda Chibia Dam demonstrates how partnership, innovation and community participation can turn vulnerability into resilience—proving that when water flows, hope grows.
